Ingredients Needed:
- Strawberries: use whole, fresh, ripe strawberries that have been washed and dried. You’ll need about 25 of them in total.
- Chocolate: for the main chocolate coating and also the drizzle. Use any type of chocolate you want, but use solid milk chocolate bars (not chocolate chips) for best results.
How to Make Chocolate-Covered Strawberries
These delicious chocolate strawberries are super quick and easy to make. Full instructions are included in the recipe card below.
- Melt chocolate: Place chocolate in a glass bowl over simmering water to melt gently without seizing.
- Dip strawberries in chocolate. Remove from heat and dip strawberries into the chocolate, holding the stem.
- Refrigerate. Place coated strawberries in the refrigerator to set completely.
- Drizzle additional chocolate (optional). Once set, drizzle with a different type of melted chocolate using a Ziploc bag with a small hole in the corner as a piping bag – this is optional but really takes them to the next level!
How to melt chocolate:
The most difficult part of making Chocolate Covered Strawberries is melting the chocolate correctly. You want a smooth chocolate coating that firms up enough to not stick to your hands when you eat them.
The best way to melt chocolate when you are coating something is to use a double boiler or a makeshift double boiler:
- Use a small pot with 1/2″-1″ of water in the bottom, and a medium-sized heatproof bowl that sits on top of the pot and doesn’t touch the water.
- Bring the water to a simmer, and place the bowl of chocolate over the top of the water.
- Reduce the heat to low, and slowly melt and stir the chocolate until smooth.
This is the most foolproof way to give you the perfect chocolate for covering just about anything! , and it’s going to give you the best results!
If you need to, you can melt chocolate in the microwave in a microwave-safe bowl on reduced heat. I don’t recommend this method unless you’re in a pinch, as there’s a higher chance the chocolate will seize, and you will end up starting over.
Chocolate Covered Strawberries FAQs
Melt your chocolate for it to stick to the strawberries, but make sure the strawberries are dry on the outside first.
Place strawberries in an airtight container in a single layer. They can be stored at room temperature for an hour or two, which is useful if you’re delivering them or setting them out to be eaten.
However, they are best stored in the refrigerator and should be good for up to 3 days, (depending on how fresh the strawberries were to begin with).
Unfortunately, chocolate-covered strawberries don’t freeze well. Berries tend to contract and get smaller when frozen, and they are watery once defrosted, so it would be a bit of a mess to freeze and defrost them!
Tips and Notes
- Let the chocolate cool. Let the chocolate cool completely until hardened before adding another melted chocolate to drizzle on top.
- Use fresh strawberries. The fresher your strawberries are, the better they will look and the longer they will last. Try to look for medium to large strawberries for the best flavor and strawberry-to-chocolate ratio!
- Dry strawberries. Make sure you dry your strawberries to give the melted chocolate the best chance of sticking to the strawberry.
- Try other fruit. Almost any fresh berries and other fruit will taste amazing with melted chocolate. Try blueberries and milk chocolate, raspberries in white chocolate, or small pieces of banana with semi-sweet chocolate to mix it up. If the berries are particularly small, stick a few of them on a mini skewer or toothpick before dipping them in chocolate.
- Use a toothpick. If you’re finding holding and dipping the strawberries a bit fiddly, you can use a toothpick to pierce and lift them.
- Make chocolate fruit pops. Remove the stem from the strawberry and push a popsicle stick into the end. Holding the popsicle stick, submerge the whole strawberry in melted chocolate. Decorate and cool completely for fun kid-friendly chocolate fruit popsicles! Great for kids birthday parties!
Chocolate Covered Strawberries Variations
- Add some nuts. Add some nuts to these chocolatey strawberries for added flavor and a crunchy texture! Crush some nuts or add pre-crushed nuts into a small bowl. Once a strawberry has been dipped into the chocolate, dip it into the crushed nuts and press down slightly so they sink into the chocolate a bit. Then place it onto a baking sheet and into the refrigerator to set. Alternatively, sprinkle the crushed nuts onto the strawberries before the chocolate sets once they are on the baking sheet.
- Use different chocolate. The chocolate is one of only two ingredients, so you can definitely go all out and get the good stuff. Use your favorite kind of chocolate, whether it’s semisweet chocolate, milk chocolate, or white chocolate.
- Use colored chocolate. Use different colored melting chocolate or Candy Melts for the main chocolate and chocolate drizzle to match the holiday or occasion you’re making them for.
- Switch things up. Add a drizzle of melted peanut butter baking chips, butterscotch, or another flavor of baking chips.
- Add other toppings. Before your chocolate sets, sprinkle on some chopped nuts, toffee bits, sprinkles, or colored sugar for a fun twist — this is a great idea for taking Chocolate Covered Strawberries beyond Valentine’s Day and on to birthdays and other holidays.

Ingredients
- 1 lb whole fresh strawberries about 25, washed and dried
- 150 grams solid milk chocolate bar of choice (not chocolate chips)
- 50-100 grams white chocolate or other (optional)
Instructions
- Wash the strawberries well and allow them to dry completely by sitting them on paper towels.
- Place 1 inch of water in a small pot.
- Break the chocolate and place it in a glass bowl that fits over the top of the pot without touching the water.
- Bring the water to a simmer over medium-high heat, then reduce to low and place the bowl with the chocolate in it over the top. Stir frequently until the chocolate bar has melted and is smooth.
- Remove from heat (I like to keep the bowl over the pot to keep the chocolate warm) and carefully dip the strawberries into the chocolate, holding the stem. Gently shake off excess chocolate and place it on a baking sheet or a sheet pan lined with parchment paper.
- When all the strawberries are coated, put them in the refrigerator to set completely.
- Once set, melt the additional chocolate if using. Place in a zip top bag, seal, and snip the corner to use for piping. Drizzle back and forth over the chocolate covered strawberries for an extra pop.
Notes
- Room temperature: Place strawberries in an airtight container in a single layer at room temperature for a few hours, which is useful if you are transporting them or serving them.
- Fridge: They are best stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, depending on how fresh the strawberries were, to begin with.
