What is served at a traditional Thanksgiving dinner?

For a classic American Thanksgiving meal, you can expect to find a roasted turkey, savory onion and celery stuffing, creamy mashed potatoes, flavorful gravy, crisp green beans (or green bean casserole), sweet corn, soft dinner rolls, tangy cranberry sauce, and a delicious pumpkin pie.

Here in Canada, we do things slightly differently. We tend to have a few other things as well, like Brussels sprouts, roasted butternut squash, and sweet maple and pecan mashed sweet potatoes (you can see my list of Best Thanksgiving Side Dishes here!).

What do I do with leftovers?

Sometimes it can be difficult to know just how much to cook for the holidays – especially if you’re having guests! If you find yourself with a lot of leftover meat, don’t worry! It can be revived into delicious, easy meals so you don’t have to prep more mini-feasts for the rest of the week!

Thanksgiving Side Dishes

Some of my fondest memories of the holidays are because of the side dishes, so I’d recommend planning them with a bit of time to spare! There are so many great ways to complement a holiday dinner.

If you’re making a big meal, try to choose a variety of dishes that can be made with different cooking methods, so you’re not relying on the oven for everything.

Some of the recipes here are good to make in the Instant Pot, some in the Slow Cooker, some on the Stovetop, and others in the Oven. Plan your dishes so you won’t have to cram things into your oven. This will also allow you to time it so all the food is ready at the same time!

This Slow Cooker Honey Glaze Ham is the perfect main course for a holiday dinner! Made with aromatic seasonings, sweet honey, and a secret ingredient, this juicy ham is irresistibly good! 😉

So I hope by now you understand my undying love for my Slow Cooker, as well as my unwavering commitment to bring you incredible recipes with minimal dishes.

This Honey Glazed Ham is one of my favorites.

It makes mealtime around the holidays so easy, and everyone will be impressed by the sweet and spiced flavors!

What I love about this ham is that while it tastes and looks fancy enough for a main dish at a dinner party or at a holiday dinner, it isn’t too difficult for a weeknight dinner or Sunday supper!

You can easily dress it up or down as you wish with some delicious side dishes.

I am not usually a big fan of mustard or ground cloves, but they pair so well with ham, and I added just enough to give it that extra layer of flavor without overpowering the ham!

Feel free to adjust the seasonings to your tastes, and experiment with the type of soda or juice used.

Ingredients Needed:

  • Ham: I used a fully cooked, boneless ham. You can also use a fully cooked, bone-in ham but because it is larger it will take longer to warm through.
  • Ginger Ale Soda: helps to keep the ham moist while also adding an amazing spiced flavor. Don’t knock it til you try it!
  • Honey: adds sweetness, but you could use maple syrup if you prefer.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar: balances the saltiness of the glaze while adding a mild fruity flavor.
  • Corn Starch: helps thicken the glaze.
  • Seasoning: freshly minced garlic, ground mustard, ground cloves, salt, and freshly cracked black pepper pack a ton of flavor into this dish.

How to Make Slow Cooker Honey Glazed Ham

This recipe couldn’t be easier to make! Full instructions are included in the recipe card below.

  1. Stir together the glaze: Combine ingredients for the glaze and whisk until smooth.
  2. Cook ham in glaze mix: Put the ham in the slow cooker, and pour the glaze mixture over it. Cover and cook until heated through.
  1. Slice and serve: Taste and adjust seasonings. Slice and serve with extra glaze from the slow cooker.

How much ham do I need for dinner?

Depending on how many side dishes you have on the menu, you should plan on about ¼-½ pound of ham per person per portion. You will probably need less for feeding children, but on the higher end for adults, and don’t forget to calculate for seconds!

Does soaking ham in ginger ale remove the salt?

Ginger ale won’t remove salt from the ham. Ginger ale is made with ginger, sugar, and carbonated water, so it will add sweetness, flavor, and moisture to your ham and help it become tender.

How do I store ham with a honey glaze?

Store leftover ham in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Allow it to cool to room temperature before putting it in the fridge.

Can I freeze ham with a honey glaze?

Absolutely! Store the ham once it has completely cooled in a freezer-safe container and freeze it for up to 1 month. Allow the ham to defrost before reheating and reusing it.

Tips and Notes

  • Slow Cooker Liners. I love using slow cooker liners to minimize the cleanup, so there’s no scrubbing the slow cooker after dinner. Simply cook your meal, then toss the bag in the bin when you’re done!
  • Leftover Ham. There are so many delicious Leftover Ham Recipes you can try, so don’t worry if you’re making too much for one meal!

Crock Pot Honey Glaze Ham Variations

  • Use a different soda. You can try this ham glaze with a different kind of soda to change the flavor, or even a mixture of soda and fruit juice. Try using Sprite and orange juice, pineapple soda, tropical soda, apple juice, or cranberry juice!
  • Add fruit. Pineapple slices and pineapple juice are great additions here, and work well to balance out the sweetness with a bit of tropical flavor. 
  • Ground Mustard. The best substitute for ground mustard is Dijon mustard, if you have it. Use ½ a tablespoon of Dijon mustard instead of ½ a teaspoon of ground mustard.

Ingredients

  • 1.7 kg fully cooked ham* about 3.75 pounds
  • 355 ml can Ginger Ale soda about 1.5 cups
  • ¼ cup honey
  • ¼ cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 2 tablespoons corn starch
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • ½ teaspoon ground mustard
  • teaspoon ground cloves
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper

Instructions

  • Place the ham in a 4-6-quart slow cooker.
  • In a medium bowl, combine soda, honey, vinegar, water, cornstarch, garlic, mustard, cloves, salt, and pepper, and whisk until smooth. Pour it over the top of the ham in the slow cooker.
  • Cover and cook on high for 3-4 hours or low for 5-8 hours (or until heated through).
  • Taste and adjust seasonings. Slice and serve with the remaining glaze from the slow cooker.

Notes

* This glaze would be awesome with an unbaked ham as well — you will just need to adjust your cooking time and test the ham’s temperature to ensure it is completely done!
** Optional: You can slice the ham before adding it to the slow cooker so that it’s all ready for guests to dig in!

This Ham and Potato Soup, is one of my favorite soup recipes! Ready in just 35 minutes, it’s made with root vegetables and cooked ham, with the bone, it’s rich, flavorful, and filling!

Hearty and warm soups are the best things for cold weather. They make great options for lunch or an easy dinner. This flavorful ham and potato soup is a family favorite here!

This delicious recipe is perfect for one of your easy weeknight meals during the busy holiday season.

With simple ingredients, this comforting and creamy soup is ready in just 35 minutes.

We will use a low-sodium chicken broth, which blends perfectly with the vegetables, ham, and seasonings. The ham bone will make a broth as it cooks, giving the soup a rich flavor. This also draws out some great nutrients from the bone!

If you enjoy baked ham during the holidays, then save this recipe as an easy and delicious way to use your leftover ham bone!

We love to serve it with Garlic Bread or Brioche Buns and a side of Roasted Carrots for a hearty and nutritious meal.

Ingredients Needed:

  • Oil: use a neutral flavored oil for sautéing the vegetables or butter, if you prefer.
  • Vegetables: use the classic root veggie trio of onions, carrots, and celery as well as hearty potatoes for a great savory flavor that will fill you up too.
  • Seasoning: garlic, parsley, thyme, salt and black pepper gives this soup a classic warm flavor.
  • Broth: use a low-sodium chicken broth so that you can control the saltiness of the soup. You can use chicken stock in a pinch.
  • Ham: we’ll be using cooked ham as well as a ham bone to get a great savory ham flavor with pieces of ham. Use leftover baked ham or ham hock if you have it.
  • Butter: to bind with the flour for thickening the milk.
  • Flour: all-purpose flour will bind to the butter and milk
  • Milk: use whole or 2% milk for making the thickened sauce that makes the soup creamy.
  • Cheese and Green Onions: shredded cheddar cheese and chopped green onions are the perfect toppings for this soup.

How to Make Ham and Potato Soup

This homemade soup is quick and easy to make. You can find the full recipe in the recipe card below.

  1. Sauté the carrots, onion and celery. Add the salt, black pepper, garlic, parsley, and thyme and cook until fragrant.
  2. Add chicken broth, ham, ham bone, and potatoes to the pot, scraping the brown caramelized bits at the bottom of the pan to mix them into the soup mixture. Cook until potatoes are tender.
  3. Make the roux: melt the butter and add the flour
  4. Thicken the milk: Add the milk and whisk until smooth. Microwave this mixture in short intervals, whisking each time, until you have a thick consistency.
  5. Thicken the soup: remove the ham bone and add the ham back into the soup, then add the thickened milk.
  6. Add cheddar cheese to the soup and stir well. Adjust seasonings to your tastes and serve.

How do I thicken potato soup?

This recipe uses thickened milk and cheese to thicken the soup. You could also use a corn starch and cold water mixture, or blend some of the potatoes with a hand blender.

How do I store ham and potato soup?

Store this recipe in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 2-3 days. Let it cool to room temperature before putting it in the fridge.

Can I freeze ham and potato soup?

I don’t usually recommend freezing this soup because potatoes change in texture when they are frozen and you may find them unappetizing.
If that doesn’t bother you, you can freeze this soup up to 3 months. Let cool to room temperature before placing in a freezer-safe container. Thaw completely before reheating to keep the potatoes from becoming overly mushy.

Tips and Notes

  • The soup will thicken as it cools down. As soups cool down they get a bit thicker, so add in some extra broth if you need to before serving, or after reheating it from being stored.
  • Use fresh vegetables. Pre-chopped vegetables tend to get dry, so using fresh vegetables that you’ve chopped yourself will give you the best flavor in your soup.
  • Mince your own garlic. Just like fresh vegetables, freshly minced garlic is packed with wonderful aromas that you might not get from garlic paste or garlic powder. I would recommend giving it a go if you haven’t tried it before!

Ham and Potato Soup Variations

  • Mix up the veggies. This delicious soup works well with so many veggies, so use whatever you have on hand, like green beans or corn. It’s a great way to use up leftovers during the holidays (you can even throw in leftover mashed potatoes!).
  • Use heavy cream. You can use heavy cream instead of thickened milk to give this soup a richer flavor, although it won’t be as thick.
  • Swap the protein: got leftover Crockpot Shredded Chicken, Air Fryer Bacon or some white beans you need to use up? Those would also be delicious in here!

Serving Suggestions

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 2 large carrots (peeled and chopped)
  • 1 medium onion (diced)
  • 2 ribs celery (chopped)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 cups low sodium chicken broth
  • 2 pounds russet or gold potatoes (peeled and chopped, 900 grams)
  • 2 cups cooked ham (chopped or shredded)
  • 1 ham bone
  • ¼ cup melted butter
  • 3 tablespoons all purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups milk (any kind)
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • shredded cheese and green onions for topping as desired

Instructions

  • In a large soup pot, heat oil over medium high heat. Add carrots, onion, and celery, saute until onions are softened, about 4-5 minutes.
  • Add salt, garlic, parsley, thyme and pepper and cook 1 minute.
  • Add chicken broth, ham, ham bone, and potatoes to the pot. Scrape the bottom with a wooden spoon to remove any browned bits from the bottom.
  • Bring to a simmer over medium high heat, then reduce heat to medium low, cover, and cook until potatoes are tender, about 10 minutes.

Thicken the milk:

  • Meanwhile, place melted butter in a medium bowl or large glass measuring cup (leave yourself some room at the top as the mixture will bubble up and thicken considerably). Whisk in flour.
  • Whisk in milk, using a spatula to get the flour from the sides of the cup as necessary.
  • Microwave in 45-60 second intervals (Start with 60, then reduce as the milk gets thicker and closer to being done), whisking well each time, until milk has thickened considerably. Stand at the microwave and keep an eye on it as the mixture will bubble up.

Finish the soup:

  • When the potatoes are cooked, remove the ham bone and pull any meat from it to stir back in.
  • Stir in the thickened milk and cheddar cheese. Top with additional shredded cheese and green onions as desired.

  • no ham bone? Totally fine! It does add lots of flavor but you can simply leave it out and add in additional ham. 
  • I haven’t tried this recipe with non-dairy options, but I think your best bet would be to reserve some of the cooked potatoes and puree them and add back into the soup. If you have leftover mashed potatoes, these would work as well.

I’m on a soup kick (we aren’t surprised, are we?) and I’ve got another new one for you!

This one is the perfect soup for holiday leftovers: Ham and Bean Soup!

This delicious soup is so hearty and so flavorful and uses both the ham bone and leftover cooked ham. It can be made using canned beans or dried beans and can easily be customized to suit your tastes.

Oh, and it takes just 15 minutes to prep!

Ingredients Needed:

  • Oil: you need just a little bit of oil to sauté the veggies before putting together the soup. I use canola oil but feel free to use your favorite cooking oil.
  • Veggies: we’re creating a flavor base with the classic mirepoix trio—carrot, onion, and celery!
  • Garlic: use freshly minced garlic for the best flavor.
  • Seasonings: this soup is so flavorful thanks to a blend of salt, dried thyme, dried parsley, and black pepper. You can swap these out for your favorite herbs if you want to.
  • Water, Ham Bone, and Chicken Bouillon: water is the base for our soup, flavored with ham bone and chicken bouillon. I love to use Better than Bouillon, but any kind will work. If you don’t have a ham bone, you can grab a smoked ham hock from the grocery store — it will still add a ton of flavor!
  • Beans: you’ll need 2 cans of white kidney beans. Don’t forget to drain and rinse! You can swap these out for another variety of bean if you prefer.
  • Ham: use cooked, chopped ham. Add as much or as little as necessary depending on how meaty the bone is.

How to Make Ham and Bean Soup

This hearty soup takes just 15 minutes to prep!

  1. Sauté the aromatics: In a large pot, heat oil, then cook carrots, celery, and onion until softened.
  2. Stir in the garlic and seasonings and cook for another minute — this helps to wake up the flavor of dried herbs after sitting in the cupboard!
  3. Add the broth ingredients: To the pot, add in water, ham bone, and chicken bouillon. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 1 hour.
  4. Add the meat and beans: Remove the ham bone, pull off and shred any meat, then add the meat back to the pot along with beans and more ham if needed.

What spices go in Ham and Bean Soup?

Thanks to the Chicken Bouillon, the soup is already plenty flavorful, so I like to add just a few additional spices to take it up a notch. For this soup, I use salt, dried thyme, dried parsley, and black pepper and it’s perfect!

What kind of beans do you put in Ham and Bean Soup?

I use canned white kidney beans, but you can totally swap them out for another type of bean if you prefer. Great Northern beans, navy beans, or Cannellini beans are all also great options.

How do you thicken Ham and Bean Soup?

You can create a thicker soup by simply adding less water/bouillon. If you’ve already made your soup, you can thicken it more by simmering it with the lid off to allow moisture to evaporate. Additionally, whisk in a mix of 2 tablespoons water and 1 tablespoon cornstarch, a little at a time, until the soup is thickened to your liking.

How to store:

Leftover Ham and Bean Soup will last in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months. To reheat, thaw overnight in the fridge if frozen, then warm in the microwave or on the stove until heated through.

Tips and Notes

  • You can use ham bone, ham hock, or ham shank. I like to use leftover ham bone from the holidays, but ham hock or ham shank also both work great. You want something that’s fully cooked or smoked.
  • If the ham hock or shank has skin on, you can choose to either cut it off or leave it on (I usually cut it off).
  • If the ham bone you use is quite meaty, you won’t need as much additional ham. If you don’t have ham bone, you will need a bit more. Just use your best judgement here!
  • Be careful with the salt. Bouillon can be quite salty, so I recommend starting with less and adding more at the end if necessary. Don’t be afraid to add seasoning at the end if it’s not quite where you want it!

Variations for Ham and Bean Soup

  • Use dried beans. If you prefer, you can totally use dried beans for this recipe. I recommend soaking them overnight (or 2 hours minimum), then adding them to the soup with the ham bone. They will soak up more liquid, so keep an eye on it and add more water as necessary.
  • Make it vegetarian. Just make it into bean soup! Leave out the ham bone and cooked ham and just add more beans, then swap the chicken bouillon out for veggie.
  • Spice it up. Give the soup a kick of heat with a sprinkle of red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper.

Serving Suggestions

Ham and Bean Soup is plenty filling on its own, but it’s also great with a side dish! A few of my favorites are crusty buttered bread, cornbread, Roasted Potatoes, Dinner Rolls, Homemade Coleslaw.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 2 large carrots (peeled and chopped)
  • 2 ribs celery (sliced)
  • 1 medium onion (finely diced)
  • 2 teaspoon freshly minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 8 cups water (use 7 cups for a thicker soup)
  • 1 ham bone, ham hock, or ham shank* (cooked)
  • 1-2 teaspoons chicken bouillon**
  • 2 cans white kidney beans (540ml or 19oz each) drained and rinsed
  • 1-2 cups cooked, chopped ham*** (optional — depending on how much ham you have already)

Instructions

  • Heat a large soup pot or dutch oven (at least 5-6 quarts) on medium-high heat and add the oil.
  • Add the carrots, celery and onions and cook, stirring often, until the onion has softened, about 3-4 minutes.
  • Add the garlic, salt, thyme, parsley and pepper. Cook and stir 1 minute.
  • Add the water, ham bone and 1 teaspoon chicken bouillon. Bring to a boil over high heat, then cover and reduce heat to medium-low. Simmer 1 hour (you can simmer even longer if you like, up to 2 hours, but the vegetables will get softer).
  • Remove the ham bone and pull the meat off. Shred with two forks. Stir the ham back into the soup along with the white beans and additional ham if using.
  • Heat through, taste and serve. (*Note that the added salt is on the low end because ham and bouillon can be quite salty. Before serving, continue to add salt in ½ teaspoon measurements, as well as additional bouillon if needed, until it tastes well-seasoned).

*You can use either a leftover ham bone from the holidays (my preferred method, because nothing goes to waste!), a ham hock or ham shank. You are looking for something fully cooked or smoked. Ham hocks are cooked, pork hocks are not cooked. If you have lots of leftover ham to go with it, you may not need to add the additional ham in the last step. 
If the ham hock or shank has skin on, you can choose to either cut it off or leave it on.
**I love Better than Bouillon but your preferred chicken bouillon will work great. It just helps to flavor our broth!

This Easy Ham and Cheese Quiche Recipe is made up of a rich, creamy, and cheesy egg custard that’s baked into a buttery pie crust. It’s packed with ham, cheddar cheese, and green onions. Just 15 minutes to prep!

Can I get a round of applause for the incredible combination that is ham and cheese? This Ham and Cheese Quiche is one of my favorite ham and cheese recipes (although Cheesy Ham and Potato Casserole is a close second.)

This quiche starts with a homemade pie crust (or store-bought!). It’s filled with a rich and creamy egg filling that’s loaded with salty ham and tangy cheddar cheese.

This recipe takes a quick 15 minutes to prep, makes great leftovers, and can be served for breakfast, lunch, or dinner!

What is Quiche?

Quiche is a savory tart that’s made up of a creamy egg custard filling baked into a buttery pastry crust.

It’s super customizable and can be loaded up with any meat, veggies, cheeses, etc. This version is made with ham, shredded cheddar, and green onions…and it’s oh-so-good!

Ingredients Needed:

  • Pie Crust: you can use homemade pie crust or your favorite store-bought variety.
  • Eggs: you’ll need 6 large eggs for this recipe.
  • Half-and-Half or Cream: cream will result in a richer, creamier texture, but half-and-half will work as well.
  • Salt and Black Pepper: I keep it simple with salt and pepper, but feel free to play around with seasonings if you like.
  • Ham: be sure to chop the ham into small pieces so it incorporates well into the quiche.
  • Shredded Cheddar Cheese: I recommend shredding your own cheese for the best texture.
  • Green Onions: adds freshness and a pop of color.

How to Make Ham Quiche

This decadent Ham Quiche comes together with just 15 minutes of prep!

  1. Prep the crust: Prepare your favorite pie crust recipe or start with a store-bought pie crust. Roll out the dough, then press the crust into a pie plate. Trim the edges as needed, (see the images below to see how to blind bake!) then bake until the bottom of the pie is starting to brown.
  2. Make the filling: In a bowl, whisk together eggs, half-and-half, salt, and pepper. Add in ham, 1 cup of cheese, and green onions.
  3. Assemble: Pour the egg mixture into the prepared pie crust, and top with ½ cup cheese.
  4. Bake: Bake the quiche until the center is completely set, then cool, slice, and serve. You may find you need to cover the edges or the top if it is browning too quickly.

Ham Quiche FAQs

Do you need to pre-bake pie crust for quiche?

Not necessarily. Pre-baking the pie crust gives it a little bit more structure so it stands up better next to the filling. It is technically optional but can help the bottom of the crust stay crisp and not get soggy. However, if you choose not to pre-bake the crust, your quiche will be just fine.

Can I use milk instead of half-and-half in quiche?

Yep! You can use cream, half-and-half, or milk in your quiche. Cream and half-and-half will yield a slightly creamier texture and richer flavor than milk but it will still be delicious with any one of them.

What is the best cheese to use for quiche?

I like to use cheddar cheese in this Ham Quiche recipe, but you can really use whatever cheese you like. You could also even use a combination of cheeses if you like. See below for cheese variation ideas!

How to store leftover Ham Quiche:

Leftover Ham Quiche will last in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months. To freeze leftovers, flash freeze until solid, then wrap in plastic and foil and store. To enjoy again, thaw overnight in the freezer if frozen, then enjoy cold or warm in the oven or in the microwave.

Variations on this quiche recipe

The great thing about quiche is it’s so customizable. So if you’re trying to use up ingredients in your fridge, or you just want to play around with flavor combinations, go crazy with it! You’re welcome to jazz this Ham Quiche up however you like.

  • Use other cheese. Pretty much any cheese will work! Try goat, feta, Swiss, mozzarella, gruyere, white cheddar, you name it.
  • Add veggies. Mushrooms, peppers, roasted red peppers, caramelized onions, broccoli, spinach, zucchini, or really anything you want!
  • Try another meat. Swap the ham out for cooked and chopped bacon or cooked Italian sausage.
  • Add fresh herbs. Add in chopped basil, parsley, chives, cilantro, etc.
  • Spice it up. Take the heat up a notch with a sprinkle of red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper or add a drizzle of hot sauce into the filling.
  • Use another crust. Use store-bought pie crust to save time or check out my Puff Pastry Ham and Cheese Quiche.
  • Lighten it up. There are a few ways you can lighten this recipe up. You can use skim milk instead of cream, try fat-free ham, use egg whites instead of whole eggs, or use low-fat cheese.
  • Make it crustless. You can easily make this a crustless quiche by baking the quiche filling in a well-greased pie plate until the eggs are set in the middle.

Ham Quiche is perfect for breakfast or brunch next to any of your favorite breakfast recipes!

It can also be served as lunch or dinner with a side of Air Fryer Broccoli, Roasted Vegetables, Creamy Tomato Soup, or Garlic Herb Dinner Rolls.

  • 1 recipe pie crust (or store bought, rolled out to fit the pan)
  • 6 large eggs*
  • ¾ cup half and half or cream
  • ¾ teaspoon salt (use less if your ham is quite salty)

  • 1 cup cooked ham chopped
  • 1 ½ cups shredded cheddar cheese (divided)
  • 3 tablespoons green onions

Instructions

Blind Baking Pie Crust*

  • Prepare Pie Crust recipe as directed or purchase store bought pie pastry (store bought pie crusts in the shell can be smaller so it's best to purchase the roll and roll it out to fit a 9" pie plate)
  • Heat oven to 425 degrees F. Roll out dough so that it is a couple inches larger than the pie plate you're baking it in.
  • Press the pie crust into the pie plate. Trim any edges that are very long, then fold the overhang under and pinch to form a thick crust edge. Crimp as desired or decorate as desired
  • Blind bake: place a piece of parchment paper in the center of the unbaked pie crust. Fill with pie weights or dried beans.
  • Bake for 10-12 minutes until edges are very light golden brown. Remove pie weights and parchment and bake for another 10 minutes or until bottom of pie crust looks dry and is starting to brown. Cool slightly and reduce oven temperature to 350 degrees F.

Ham Quiche

  • In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, half and half, salt and pepper.
  • Sprinkle ham, 1 cup of cheese, and green onions into the pie crust and pour the egg mixture over top. Sprinkle with remaining ½ cup cheese.
  • Bake at 350 degrees F for 30-40 minutes until light golden brown. Cover with foil to prevent additional browning (you can cover just the edges or the whole quiche — if you cover the whole quiche be sure to spray the foil with non stick spray so it doesn't stick).
  • Bake another 10-20 minutes until the center is completely set (the exact cook time will depend on the depth of your pie plate). Let cool for 5-10 minutes before slicing and serving.

*NOTE: the original recipe did not require the blind baking of the pie crust and I know a lot of people had success with it. This is optional, but can help the bottom to stay crisp and not get soggy. 
** The original recipe used 8 eggs instead of 6. Because of some comments regarding overflowing, I have reduced the filling slightly to ensure more people see success. If you previously made the filling with 8 eggs and it worked well for you, feel free to go that route! Always leave a little room at the top as the eggs will puff up (and then deflate somewhat).

This Easy Spiral Ham with Apple Cider Glaze is the perfect holiday dinner table centerpiece! It’s so easy to prepare and results in tender, juicy, sweet, and salty ham.

You can ask pretty much any member of our family whether they prefer turkey or ham on the holiday table, and it’s going to be ham every single time.

Now, don’t get me wrong, we love our Roast Turkey, but there’s something about the tender, juicy texture and incredible flavor of this Spiral Ham with Apple Cider Glaze.

This recipe takes just 15 minutes to prep and makes the perfect Easter ham, Thanksgiving ham, Christmas ham, Monday ham, Tuesday ham…Okay, you get it. 😉

I’ve included options to bake the spiral ham or to make Slow Cooker Spiral Ham, so pick whatever works best for you! The result is tender, juicy, flavorful, and finished off with a sweet apple cider glaze.

Be sure to serve it with Garlic Mashed Potatoes, Honey Glazed Carrots, Cheesy Baked Asparagus and Mom’s Homemade Buns to round out your holiday dinner!

Ingredients Needed:

  • Spiral Sliced Ham: I use a 3-4 kg/7-9 pound ham for this recipe. Keep in mind that a ham of a different size will cook at a different rate.
  • Spiced Apple Cider, Light Brown Sugar, and Cornstarch: makes up a simple, sweet, perfectly spiced apple cider glaze for the ham.
  • Salt and Pepper: just add these to the glaze to taste.

How to Choose a Spiral Ham

Here are a few of my tips for choosing a spiral ham:

  • Find a butcher you trust. The key is quality for a good price. Thankfully, hams go on sale all the time, especially around the holidays.
  • Plan ahead. The standard recommendation is ½ pound of ham per person. However, this depends on who you are feeding or how many sides you have. If you’re feeding kids or have a lot of other food, you can likely plan on less.
  • Pick the right cut. Not all spiral hams are cut the same. Some are cut thicker, while others are thinner. Once you find one that your family loves, stick to the same brand every year so you know what you’re getting.

How to Make Spiral Ham with Apple Cider Glaze

This baked ham recipe takes just 15 minutes to prep!

  1. Bake the ham: Wrap the ham in tin foil or place it into an oven-safe roasting bag. Bake until heated through, then remove from the oven and allow it to rest for 15 minutes.
  2. Make the glaze: In a saucepan, whisk together cider, sugar, and cornstarch. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer until thickened.
  3. Serve: Slice the ham and serve drizzled with apple cider glaze.

How to Make Crockpot Spiral Ham

This Spiral Ham with Apple Cider Glaze is great in the oven, but can also be cooked in the crockpot!

To cook your ham in the crockpot, pour some apple juice or apple cider in the bottom of the slow cooker, add in the ham, and cook on low for 8-10 hours.

If you don’t have quite that long, you can give it a head start on high for roughly 4 hours, depending on the size of your ham.

Spiral Ham FAQs

How long does it take to cook a fully-cooked spiral ham?

While this depends on the size of your ham, the rule of thumb is roughly 40 minutes/kg. The best way to tell that it’s done is to use a meat thermometer. It should have an internal temperature of 140ºF.

Do you cook a spiral ham covered or uncovered?

Covered! Wrapping the ham in foil or placing it in an oven-safe roasting bag keeps the moisture in so the ham comes out beautifully tender and juicy.

Can spiral ham be prepped ahead of time?

There really isn’t much prep involved in this recipe, so not a ton can be done in advance. However, you can prepare the glaze 2-3 days before you cook your ham. You can also cook and slice your ham and place it into a large rimmed baking dish. Cover with glaze and store in the fridge, then warm in the oven, covered and on 275ºF, for an hour or until warmed.

How to store:

Leftover ham will last wrapped tightly in the fridge for 2-3 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months. To reheat, thaw in the fridge if frozen, then warm in the oven or microwave until heated through.

How to freeze leftover ham:

To freeze the ham, place leftover slices in large freezer bags and flatten to the best of your ability to allow for quicker thawing. I recommend freezing in single-meal portions so you can thaw only as much as you need.

Ingredients

  • 3-4 kg spiral sliced ham 7-9 lbs
  • 2 cups spiced apple cider (not apple juice)
  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons corn starch
  • salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 275 degrees.
  • Wrap ham entirely in tin foil or place in an oven-safe roasting bag — this keeps it moist!
  • Bake ham for 2.5-3 hours, or roughly 40 minutes per kg. Remember that the ham is fully cooked (be sure to check your label), so you are simply heating through. You don’t want to overcook and dry out your ham!
  • Remove the ham from the oven and let rest for 15 minutes before serving. While the ham is resting, make the glaze.
  • In a medium saucepan, whisk together the cider, sugar and corn starch. 
  • Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce heat to simmer until thickened. Taste and adjust seasoning as desired.
  • Serve over ham.

Notes

Storage:
Leftover ham will last wrapped tightly in the fridge for 2-3 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months. To reheat, thaw in the fridge if frozen, then warm in the oven or microwave until heated through.
To freeze the ham, place leftover slices in large freezer bags and flatten to the best of your ability to allow for quicker thawing. I recommend freezing in single-meal portions so you can thaw only as much as you need.

These Easy Leftover Ham Recipes are perfect to lend new life to your holiday ham! Soups, sandwiches, breakfast, casseroles and pastas, there’s something for everyone!

I don’t know about you, but in our house, one of the best things about the holiday season is allllllll of the leftovers.

Leftover ham, leftover turkey, leftover mashed potatoes, dinner rolls, roasted veggies, gravies and sauces, etc., etc., etc. I get giddy just thinking about it!

Thanks to my deep freeze and some creativity, I take all of those extras and reinvent them into tons of delicious meals! No one ever suspects they’re still eating holiday leftovers well after the fact. 😉

Ham is easily a favorite around here when it comes to the big holidays like Christmas and Thanksgiving (okay, so it’s a tie with this Garlic Brown Sugar Dry Brine Turkey and these meatballs!).

Which is why I’ve put together a list of 30+ of my favorite leftover ham recipes below – all kinds of soups, pastas, casseroles, you name it!

How to Store Leftover Ham

Leftover ham is great to store refrigerated or frozen.

Store Leftover Ham In the Fridge: I prefer to keep a small amount of leftovers in the fridge to use in the days immediately after, and freeze the rest. Leftover ham will keep for 3-5 days when refrigerated airtight.

Freeze Leftover Ham: I find that the best way to freeze ham is cooked and cubed, in small freezer bags. This way it’s ready to thaw whenever the occasion calls! If you have a large piece of ham to freeze, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap, plus an extra layer of aluminum foil to help protect from freezer burn.

You’ll also find that many of the recipes in this list are great for making ahead and freezing, too! So you can double-up on the convenience with pre-made meals. 

Tips for Success

  • Most ham is pre-cooked. Most hams from the grocery store are already fully cooked or cured. For this reason, you can add any leftover ham right into the recipes below! No need to worry about cooking through or heating first, since that part’s already out of the way.
  • Avoid drying out leftover ham. Because ham is a lean meat, be sure to reheat it covered, and with a spoonful of broth or water. Unless you’re reheating ham in a saucy casserole, soup, pasta, or rice dish, in which case it will absorb the sauce or liquid in the dish.

I have a couple of requirements for appetizer recipes:

  1. They have to taste good. (Win for everyone!)
  2. They must be easy to make. (Win for me!) 😉

These ham and cheese sliders definitely fit the bill so they make the perfect addition to holiday parties or game day get-togethers. They also work as a quick and easy, kid-friendly dinner!

These sliders take a quick 5 minutes to prep, are made up of just 8 simple ingredients, and taste so good! Sweet, buttery rolls, salty ham, melty, gooey cheese, flavorful herbs, and honey mustard. I mean, it doesn’t get better than that!

Ingredients for ham and cheese sliders:

  • Rolls: you can use regular dinner rolls or Hawaiian rolls.
  • Ham: you’ll need about ¾ pound of sliced ham. You can buy it pre-sliced at the grocery store or slice your own.
  • Cheese: I like to use Swiss cheese because I love the tangy flavor with the salty ham. However, any type of melty cheese will work.
  • Melted Butter, Honey Mustard, Dried Parsley, Garlic Powder, and Onion Powder: makes up an ultra flavorful, savory, and slightly sweet sauce for the rolls.

How to make

  1. Slice the rolls: Without pulling the rolls apart, slice them in half so the top is separated from the bottom. Place the bottom rolls in a greased 9×13″ baking dish.
  2. Assemble the sandwiches: Top the rolls with half of the ham, then layer on the cheese. Finish with the rest of the ham, then add on the top buns.
  3. Add the sauce: Mix together melted butter, honey mustard, parsley, garlic powder, and onion powder, then drizzle the mixture over the assembled rolls.
  4. Bake: Cover with foil and bake for 15 minutes at 350ºF. Uncover at bake for another 5-10 minutes then serve and enjoy!

What cheese goes with ham?

I love Swiss cheese on these sliders because its sweet, tangy flavor pairs so well with the salty ham. If Swiss cheese isn’t your thing you can definitely use another type of melty cheese as well. Try mozzarella, provolone, Monterey jack, gruyere, you name it. You really can’t go wrong with cheese. 😉

Should you cover ham and cheese sliders?

Yes! You should cover the sliders with foil for the first 15 minutes of baking time so the tops don’t burn before the cheese is melted. After 15 minutes you can uncover them and bake them for another 5-10 minutes to toast the tops of the rolls.

Can ham and cheese sliders be prepped ahead of time?

They sure can! You can assemble the sandwiches up to a day in advance and store them covered in the fridge. I recommend waiting to add the sauce until right before you’re ready to bake them so the buns don’t get soggy.

How do you store leftovers?

  • Swap the meat. You can swap the ham out for another variety of ham like honey ham or smoked ham or you can use sliced turkey or chicken. Make sure that any meat you use is cooked first!
  • Spice it up. Give the sandwiches a kick of heat by swapping the honey mustard out for dijon mustard, or adding a pinch of cayenne to the butter sauce.

  • 300 grams sliced ham (about ¾ pound)
  • 160 grams Swiss cheese slices (about ⅓ pound)

  • 1 tablespoon honey mustard

Instructions

This Cheesy Ham and Potato Casserole is a quick and easy make-ahead casserole recipe! Tender potatoes and cubed ham are tossed in a rich and creamy sauce and topped with gooey, melty cheddar cheese!

Cheese and potatoes are a classic combination. Cheesy Potato Casserole, cheesy mashed potatoes, Cheeseburger Casserole with Potatoes…It’s a combo you can pretty much never go wrong with. Add ham to the mix and you’ve got probably the best trio of ingredients of all time.

This cheesy Ham and Potato Casserole is an easy recipe you can throw together in just 20 minutes. It’s also the perfect make-ahead dish since it can be assembled and stored in the fridge to be baked later on!

This recipe is especially easy to prep thanks to Boomer Gold potatoes from The Little Potato Company. These Creamer potatoes come ready to go so all you have to do is cut them into quarters. No washing or peeling necessary!

Ingredients for cheesy ham and potato casserole

  • Little Potatoes: I used Boomer Gold potatoes from The Little Potato Company to keep the prep super easy. No washing or peeling required!
  • Butter: I always use salted butter. Unsalted will work as well, but you may need to add some extra salt yourself.
  • Onion: make sure the onion is finely diced so it incorporates well into the casserole.
  • Garlic: I always keep a jar of pre-minced garlic on hand but freshly minced garlic is great too! I don’t recommend swapping it for garlic powder because the flavor just isn’t the same.
  • Seasonings: a simple blend of dried parsley, salt, black pepper, and paprika is all you need to give this cheesy casserole so much flavor.
  • All-Purpose Flour: helps thicken the cream sauce.
  • Half-and-Half or Whole Milk: half-and-half will have a creamier texture but whole milk will work great as well.
  • Sour Cream: helps thicken the sauce and adds a delicious tangy flavor.
  • Ham: any cooked and cubed ham will work.
  • Shredded Cheddar Cheese: if you have time, shred your own cheese. It melts better and has a smoother texture!

How to make cheesy ham and potato casserole

  1. Prep the potatoes: Cut the potatoes into quarters and add them into a large pot. Cover with cold water and sprinkle in salt. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to medium-high, and cook until tender.
  2. Make the sauce: Melt butter in a skillet, add in onion, and cook. Stir in garlic and seasonings, then whisk in flour and half-and-half. Cook until thickened and stir in sour cream.
  3. Assemble the casserole: Place the cooked potatoes and ham into a greased baking dish. Pour the sauce over top and stir. Top with cheese then bake for 20 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Variations

The magic of cheesy casserole is it’s super customizable! Here are a few ideas if you want to switch things up:

  • Add more veggies. This casserole is a great way sneak some extra veggies in, especially if you have picky kiddos! Try adding chopped asparagus, bell peppers, broccoli, mushrooms, spinach, shredded carrots, peas, etc. If you are adding veggies, be sure to cook them first.
  • Spice it up. Give the casserole a kick of heat by adding red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper to the spice mixture. You can also mix in a drizzle of Sriracha or hot sauce!
  • Use another cheese. Cheddar is a classic but other melty cheeses would work as well. Try it with mozzarella, gouda, Monterey jack, Colby jack, you name it.
  • Swap the meat. This recipe works great with ground beef, sausage, turkey, chorizo, or even bacon. Make sure whatever meat you use is pre-cooked or you cook it first yourself, draining off excess grease if necessary. No one wants an oily casserole!

This Honey Baked Ham is coated in a sweet ham glaze, wrapped and baked until warmed through and full of flavor! The easiest way to get tender, juicy baked ham!

Ham is one of our favorite proteins around here, but we usually only cook them around the holidays!

Every time I dig into this Honey Baked Ham I wonder why I don’t make it more often (because I could happily eat the leftovers for a week and not tire of it!), and then a few more months pass.

We especially love it with a side of these Roasted Potatoes and Carrots or these Cream Cheese Mashed Potatoes! Add a basket of my Mom’s Homemade Buns and I’m one happy woman 😉

Since ham is naturally on the salty side (the brine has that effect, although you can get lower salt options), it pairs so well with a sweet honey brown sugar glaze.

Another reason I love cooking a ham is because they are so easy to bake up in the oven, since the majority are already cooked and just need to be reheated!

That being said, there are a few tips and tricks below to ensure you see the best results — tender, juicy, flavorful baked ham that’s never dry!

How long to cook a ham?

How long a ham needs to be cooked depends primarily on its side.

As a general rule, a bone-in ham should be cooked for 40 minutes per kilogram or 18 minutes per pound at 275 degrees F.

You can choose to bake it a higher temperature for longer, but I find low and slow is the best way to ensure they don’t dry out.

The nice thing is, baking a ham is not as much a science as cooking, say, a beef roast or a whole roast chicken, since you’re looking for one that is already fully cooked.

Warming a ham in the oven does still take a considerable amount of time because they are so large, but with a little planning ahead they are such a great addition to a holiday or family dinner!

Should I choose bone in or boneless ham?

I prefer bone-in ham, but either will work in this recipe.

Bone-in meat tends to stay juicier throughout the cook time, and besides — that hambone has loads of flavor and is perfect in soup!

If you’re looking for something smaller or just want the ease of not carving around a bone, you can opt for a boneless spiral ham.

Spiral ham or whole ham?

I use a spiral ham for this recipe, when I can find them, but either works just fine!

With a spiral ham, the glaze can easily seep into the meat while it bakes, and easy to serve. It looks impressive, even if you don’t know how to carve a whole ham!

If you are using a whole uncut ham, you may want to score the exterior so that the glaze has a chance to penetrate and flavor the meat.

Uncut hams are a great option if you’re baking a ham throughout the year and not during the holidays, as they are widely available and less expensive.

What goes into the ham glaze?

All the good stuff! Butter, honey, brown sugar, garlic, ground mustard, salt and pepper.

Honey Baked Ham

This Honey Baked Ham is coated in a sweet ham glaze, wrapped and baked until warmed through and full of flavor! The easiest way to get tender, juicy baked ham!

Ingredients

  • 9-10 lb bone in, spiral cut ham (fully cooked)
  • ¾ cup honey (clear, not creamed)
  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • ½ teaspoon ground mustard
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 275 degrees F.
  • Lay two very large pieces of foil over the top of a 9×13" baking dish (or a baking dish that will fit your ham). Place your ham in the center of the foil in the baking dish (you want enough foil so that you can cover it completely), with the cut side down.
  • Wrap the foil completely around the ham, adding additional foil if necessary to cover.
  • Bake at 275 degrees F for 2.5-3 hours, until an internal temperature of 140 degrees F is reached (3 hours total is about right for a 10lb ham, you may need more or less according to the size of your ham.)
  • In a small pot, combine honey, butter, brown sugar, garlic, mustard and pepper. Bring to a boil over medium high heat, then reduce heat to medium and boil for 2 minutes.
  • Remove foil and brush with half of the glaze. Increase oven temperature to 450 and bake for 10-15 minutes, until the glaze is nice and sticky and starting to brown.

Ham gravy

  • Combine remaining glaze and ham juices in a skillet and bring to a simmer. Thicken if desired with a corn starch slurry (equal parts corn starch and water, combined then added to the simmering juices).
