These Bacon Wrapped Smokies are the perfect appetizer! They’re made with just 4 ingredients, take just 10 minutes to prep, and are a total crowd-pleaser at any party.

Pigs in a Blanket might be one of my all time favorite appetizers. Kids love it, adults love it…you just can’t go wrong.

A new favorite? Bacon Wrapped Smokies!

They’re like mini pigs in a blanket, but instead of crescent rolls, they’re wrapped in bacon. That smoky, salty crunch paired with the flavor of the little smokies is heightened by the addition of brown sugar and just a little chili powder.

This easy finger-food is perfect for a party and takes just 10 quick minutes to prep!

If you’re looking for more easy party foods, check out these Air Fryer Ravioli, this Taco Dip or these Baked Chicken Wings.

Ingredients Needed:

ingredients needed for bacon wrapped smokies.
  • Bacon: you’ll need 15-16 slices of thin-cut bacon. I don’t like to use thick cut bacon here because it can take a long time to crisp up.
  • Little Smokies: cocktail wieners or little smokies.
  • Brown Sugar: caramelizes on the outside of the bacon, which is absolutely delicious.
  • Chili Powder (optional): I love to add a little chili powder in with the brown sugar for a little kick of heat.

How to Make Bacon Wrapped Smokies

  1. Prep the bacon: Remove the bacon from the packaging and cut it into thirds.
  2. Wrap the smokies: Wrap one piece of bacon around each smokie, then secure with a toothpick. Place onto a lined sheet pan.
  3. Season: Mix together brown sugar and chili powder, then sprinkle that evenly over the smokies.
  4. Bake: Bake at 350ºF until the bacon is crispy.

Bacon Wrapped Smokies FAQs

How long do you cook smokies in the oven?

As long as it takes for the bacon to get crispy. For me, this usually takes 35-45 minutes at 350ºF. I recommend checking them at 35 minutes, then adding time as needed.

How to store:

These Bacon Wrapped Smokies are definitely best right away. However, leftovers will last in the fridge for up to 3 days or can be frozen for up to 3 months.

Can you reheat little smokies wrapped in bacon?

Totally! To reheat your smokies, just pop that back into the oven or air fryer and cook them for 10-15 minutes (5 minutes in the air fryer) or until they’re hot and the bacon is re-crisped.

overhead image of bacon wrapped smokies in white bowl with toothpicks in.

Tips and Notes

  • Use thin-cut bacon. Thick-cut bacon won’t crisp as easily.
  • Preheat the oven. We want the oven to be nice and hot when we put the smokies in so the bacon can start crisping right away. Soggy bacon is not the way to go.
  • Line the pan. I use foil or parchment paper to line the baking sheet before adding on the smokies. This helps prevent them from sticking and the bacon from burning.
  • Secure with a toothpick. We don’t want the bacon unraveling as the smokies bake.

Serving Suggestions

These Bacon Wrapped Smokies are the perfect finger food for a party! Serve them with your favorite dipping sauces and as part of a larger appetizer spread.

A few of my favorites are Air Fryer Ravioli, Ham and Cheese Sliders, and Pigs in a Blanket!

These Easy Appetizer recipes are perfect for any occasion! Whether you’re looking for the perfect starter to an elegant dinner or the best dips to serve on game day, these easy appetizer recipes have you covered!

long collage for easy appetizer recipes with nine images and title

We love doing a meal of appetizers for different holidays, game days or just for a gathering with friends.

These are some of our favorites, with a few extra from friends that I’m excited to try!

The Best Appetizer Ideas

Appetizers are almost always my favorite part of a party because it’s a chance to try a handful of different foods and flavors.

I have to admit – there are some nights when dinner in my home consists of appetizers. Those nights are my kids’ favorite dinner nights and I think I love them just as much!

My favorite appetizer recipes are those that are quick and easy to pull together, often requiring only a few minutes of prep and/or a handful of ingredients.

After trying out many different appetizers, I’ve rounded up the best ones here.

These range from classics like buffalo chicken dip and little smokies to charcuterie cups and bacon-wrapped shrimp. So whether you’re going for creamy and cheesy or something a little lighter, you’re sure to find a great recipe here!

How Many Different Appetizers Should I Serve?

This is a question I am constantly trying to answer myself. You definitely don’t want anyone to leave hungry but neither do you want there to be a ton of food leftover.

(And, being honest – I don’t want to spend more time in the kitchen preparing the food than necessary either!)

It also depends on the occasion. An elegant dinner party where the appetizers are just the starters to a nicer meal is a lot different than a holiday cocktail party or game day tailgating where little bites are the main event.

A rule of thumb is to make 2 or 3 appetizers for a dinner party and 5 or 6 for a cocktail party. I like to vary the dishes- maybe one savory, one slightly spicy, a lighter, healthier option, and a dip or two. And don’t forget the meat and cheese board!

35+ Easy Appetizer Recipes

Let's dig into the recipes, shall we? Here are my favorite easy appetizer recipes for everything from a casual dinner to an elegant affair or game day party.

Little smokies, also known as “lil smokies” or cocktail weenies, are mini pork sausages that come pre-packaged and pre-cooked. They can be prepped and served in a number of different ways.

One of my favorite ways to cook these little bites, or really any appetizer, is in the slow cooker. Recipes that allow me to just throw everything into one pot and walk away, like my crockpot sweet and sour meatballs and my crockpot chicken wings, are perfect for entertaining!

This crockpot little smokies recipe consists of mini pork sausages that are slow-cooked in a simple but super flavorful sauce. They’re ridiculously quick to make and perfect served as an appetizer or as an entree!

I guarantee you they’ll be one of the firsts to disappear at any party!

Love smokies? Try these Bacon Wrapped Smokies and these Pigs in a Blanket next!

Ingredients needed:

  • Little Smokies or Cocktail Sausages: you can use whatever variety you prefer. (This is the brand I usually use)
  • BBQ Sauce, Brown Sugar, Apple Cider Vinegar: makes up a sweet and tangy sauce for the little smokies.
  • Seasonings: the sauce is already so flavorful, but I like to add ground mustard and red pepper flakes to give it an extra kick of heat.

How to make Crockpot Little Smokies

Just 5 minutes to prep and you’ve done your job! This recipe could not be easier.

  • Combine: Toss all of the ingredients into your slow cooker and mix well.
  • Cook: Cover and cook on low for 3-4 hours or on high for 1.5-2 hours.

Lil Smokies FAQs

Are little smokies already cooked?

Yes! The cocktail sausages you get at the store are already cooked, so all you’re doing is warming them.

Can you cook little smokies on the stove?

Absolutely! If you’re shorter on time, simply toss everything together into a saucepan and warm on low heat for 20 minutes or until heated through.

How do you store leftovers?

Leftover smokies will last in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-5 days. To reheat, microwave or warm on the stove until heated through.

Can these be frozen?

Yes. To freeze, store the leftovers in an airtight container and keep them in the freezer for up to 2 months. To reheat, thaw in the fridge if frozen then warm on the stove or in the microwave.

Serving suggestions

This recipe makes the perfect appetizer for a party or a delicious addition to a larger meal! Here are a few ideas:

Variations on these fun cocktail weenies

  • Make sweet and sour smokies. Give the smokies a flavor twist by using the sauce from my sweet and sour meatballs recipe.
  • Swap the protein. Switch things up and use meatballs in place of the smokies or use a combination of both. You can also use full size smokies or turkey smokies and just slice them thinly.
  • Spice it up. Kick the heat up a notch by adding buffalo sauce, hot sauce, or sriracha.
  • Use homemade BBQ sauce. Use classic homemade BBQ sauce or try it with cherry BBQ sauce, Dr. Pepper BBQ sauce, or pineapple brown sugar BBQ sauce.
  • Add bacon. Mix in cooked and crumbled bacon for some added texture. Make sure you do this after the smokies are cooked and right before serving so the bacon doesn’t get soggy.

This pigs in a blanket recipe is my completely homemade version of a classic! It’s made up of flavorful little smokies rolled up in buttery, flaky, golden-brown crescent rolls. It’s a guaranteed hit whether you’re serving it up for dinner for the kiddos, as an appetizer at a party, or as a snack!

Turns out, besides the fact that these pigs in a blanket are absolutely delicious, there are a few different reasons to love them:

  1. They’re completely homemade. Yep, even the crescent dough (but YES, you can use store bought if you really want to).
  2. The kids LOVE them. Okay, the adults do too. 😉
  3. They’re so quick and easy. Just 25 minutes to prep and 15 minutes to bake.
  4. They can be easily prepped ahead of time and stored in the fridge or freezer to be quickly baked later on.

What are pigs in a blanket?

Pigs in a blanket are a classic American appetizer made up of pork sausage (the pig) wrapped in biscuit dough (the blanket).

Pigs in a blanket can be made using standard-sized hot dogs and served as a meal on its own or using little smokies and served as an appetizer! You can also use regular hot dogs and cut them into smaller pieces if necessary.

Ingredients needed:

These pigs in a blanket are made up of a simple list of ingredients—most of which you probably already have on hand.

ingredients needed for pigs in a blanket

Homemade crescent roll dough:

This homemade crescent roll dough is just about as easy as it would be to run to the door and get store-bought dough! It takes just 10 minutes to throw together.

  • All-Purpose Flour: the recipe calls for 1 ½ cups of flour but you’ll actually start with just 1 cup and add more as needed. If you add it all at once, the dough will likely be too dry!
  • Warm Milk: warm milk is needed to activate the yeast so that the dough can rise properly.
  • Butter: make sure you melt the butter before incorporating it into the dough for a softer texture.
  • Yeast: make sure you’re using instant or quick yeast.
  • Sugar: the sugar helps the yeast to activate and adds a bit of sweetness.
  • Salt: enhances the flavor of the crescent rolls.

Pigs in a blanket:

  • Little Smokies: you can also use full size hot dogs but you will need to cut your dough differently.
  • Egg and Water: makes up an egg wash that gives the outside of the rolls that delicious golden-brown color.
  • Seasonings: I use a simple duo of garlic powder and dried parsley to give the pigs in a blanket just a little bit of extra flavor.

How to make pigs in a blanket

  1. Make the dough: Stir together 1 cup of flour, milk, butter, yeast, sugar, and salt. Slowly add in additional flour just until the dough is no longer sticky. Divide the dough into 4 portions and roll it out into a rough rectangle. Cut the larger rectangle into 7-8 skinny triangles.
  2. Wrap the little smokies: Place one smokie at the wide end of each triangle and roll it up. Repeat with all of the smokies and line the prepped pigs in a blanket on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet.
  3. Add the egg wash and seasonings: Beat the egg and water together. Stir together garlic powder and parsley. Brush the tops of the assembled pigs in a blanket with the egg wash and sprinkle on the garlic parsley mixture.
  4. Bake: Bake at 350ºF for 15 minutes or until golden-brown.

Pigs in a blanket FAQs

Are pigs in a blanket served hot or cold?

These pigs in a blanket are best served warm or room temperature. However, I don’t think anyone would really blame you if you ended up snacking on the leftovers straight from the fridge. 😉

Can pigs in a blanket be prepped ahead of time?

Absolutely! Pigs in a blanket are the perfect make-ahead recipe and they can be stored either in the fridge or in the freezer.

To make ahead and refrigerate, assemble as directed, line on a baking sheet, cover with plastic wrap, and store in the fridge for up to 2-3 days before baking. When you’re ready to serve, just bake as directed.

To make ahead and freeze, assemble as directed, then line on a baking sheet and freeze for 2 hours. Once the rolls are frozen you can transfer them to a container and freeze them for up to 3 months.

Can you cook these from frozen?

Yes! You can easily bake the prepped pigs in a blanket straight from the freezer. No thawing necessary. Simply preheat the oven to 400ºF and cook for 25 minutes or until golden-brown.

How do you store baked pigs in a blanket?

Cooked pigs in a blanket will last in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
You can also freeze and reheat in the oven at 400ºF until warm.

How do you reheat pigs in a blanket?

I recommend reheating already cooked pigs in a blanket in the oven for the best texture. Simply warm them for 5-10 minutes at 350ºF or until warmed through. You can microwave them, but the crescent rolls will be soggier.

finished pigs in a blanket on parchment paper on a baking sheet

Variations

  • Make them cheesy. You can roll any type of cheese you like into the crescent roll dough with the little smokies. Cheddar, provolone, pepper jack, you name it.
  • Add bacon. Sprinkle some crushed bacon bits into the dough before you roll it up for a smoky crunch.
  • Flavor them differently. Make them extra garlicky and slather the dough with garlic butter before baking, make everything bagel pigs in a blanket by swapping the garlic powder and dried parsley for everything bagel seasoning, make them spicy by adding in diced jalapeño. The possibilities are endless!
  • Make them vegetarian. You can easily swap the little smokies for a vegetarian variety.
  • Use store-bought dough. I’m a huge advocate for the homemade dough but if you’re shorter on time, store-bought dough works great too!

Serving suggestions

You can serve these pigs in a blanket as a snack with ketchup, mustard, or BBQ sauce or as part of a larger meal with a side of air fryer tater tots, instant pot macaroni and cheese, broccoli salad, or roasted veggies.

These also make the perfect addition to an appetizer spread for a party. Here are a few more easy appetizer recipes to try:
